"The Presentation of Self" by Erving Goffman in the 1950's helped take us from Charles Horton Cooley's point of primary group and how these changes affected our lives to do the broadening of technology. Goffman believed that first impressions are important and he identify to points within this, the ability to give and give off. The impression to give remained as deceitful, controlling, and the individual in the situation could even off goods. Giving off is a way of feigning and being uncontrollable, for example facial expressions. It's a game on gaining an identity and having the power to control others. It is almost a struggle to have one identity because it is almost as if you give yourself a role.
